Our local hospital has come under fire after mixing up 2 newborns. A nurse at the Medical Center recently brought a newborn to a mother to breastfeed, but it was later discovered it wasn’t her baby.
Yes, that’s right a woman breastfed the wrong baby. How would you feel knowing your newborn had just breastfed from a total stranger? I would be livid and horrified to discover that they had just given my baby to the wrong mother and allowed her to nurse my child. I imagine the mother that nursed the baby was upset as well.
The nurse that brought the baby into the room failed to match the ID bracelets of the mother and baby. Her critical error. When I worked on the Labor and Delivery floor as an RN that was one thing that was drilled into our heads was that you always check the bands no matter what!
That leads me to ask, wouldn’t you notice as a mother that it wasn’t your baby? Yes, I understand the mother may have been tired or the baby may have been very new but as a mom I have to say that I could certainly recognize my baby from another baby in a line up. They all have their own distinct look and after taking a look at my child I would know him or her from another.
Considering that all sorts of diseases can be passed along in breast milk, not the least of which is AIDS I would be livid as the mother of the baby that had breastfed from a stranger. I can’t imagine how she felt when they told her about the mix up.
How would you feel if your baby was mixed up at the hospital and allowed to breastfeed from a stranger?
